I don't reallyl understand how football is played. If I watch the game, it's only once a year during the Super Bowl and for the past few years that has been at the Guirao's house. This year Auntie Neny and Uncle Reny are in the Philippines to attend Uncle Reny's 50th High School Reunion (isn't that cool?) I thought I would ask Paul a few questions about the yearly gathering:
J: So you are having a party this weekend? What time?
P: That's correct! It's the annual Guirao BBQ. Well there's no real time as to when you show up.. just if you don't get there before the game, you won't find a parking spot!
J: How many Superbowl parties have you had? How many Super Bowls have there been? And and who is playing anyway?
P: Gosh.. We started back in '98 - '99.. I guess that's about 6 years...then it was only a handful of us. Wasn't even a party.. it was one of those.. hey let's bbq for Super Bowl kinda thing. This party has evolved over the years.. my next goal is to have my own halftime show (which would probably involve a form of "dancing")
Hmm.. well if I'm correct.. this is Super Bowl 39!. It's the New England Patriots vs the Philidephia Eagles. Sorry Jr.. but Philly's going down!
J: How many people do you expect to have at your place and what time do you think they will be leaving? Will they help you clean up?
P: Well the party seems to grow every year. I think this year will be our biggest.. I'm expecting around 75 people. (doesn't sound like alot but if you see the size of the house.. it's alot)
Most people will leave right after the game.. they may stay for about an extra hour but that's about it.. but this year may be different. We're playing poker right after so they may never leave.
People tend to help clean up.. but mostly it's the Guirao bros picking up the garbage. Fortunately the girls that are coming have offered to help clean.. Bless their souls!! =)
J: Since your mom and dad are in the Philippines, do you expect the party to be any different from past years? Be honest.
P: WHAT?!?!? My parents aren't here? OH IT'LL BE A MADHOUSE THEN.. HIGH SCHOOL/FRAT STYLE!!!!!
Well to be honest.. yes.. the party may be slightly different this year. There will probably be more booze than before and we're not just talking beer! Have you ever heard of a Silverback? =P
J: It's a potluck, right? Do you think that means a lot of chips? What are you cooking?
P: Yup, it's the first year we've done a potluck, most people are bringing food. Which probably means alot of Chips, Soda and Beer. The Guirao's will still be supplying the majority of the food.
Well it's the typical menu from us... Korean BBQ, Tri Tip and Oysters.. of course hot dogs and hamburgers for whom ever else.
J: I know you also have a Super Bowl pool every year so why not fix it so someone in the family wins and we all split it? Doesn't that make sense? Who would know?
P: Ahh the super bowl pool.. I would love to fix it.. but we draw random numbers for each square.. so it's quite hard to fix.. but i could pull a President Bush tactic and just take over the game and keep all the money given to me. =)
J: Any commercials you are looking forward to? I read that Napster is going to be airing a commercial that will target people who can't afford the 99 cents to download a song with Apple's iTunes, or, I guess can't afford an iPod. Is it possible that there is an mp3 player better than the iPod? Be honest.
P: Not really.. I'm usually cooking so I hardly ever get to watch TV.. but I do always look forward to the Budwieser commercials. Though it wasn't a commercial.. I missed Janet Jacksons breast shot.. why ... CUZ I WAS COOKING!!
I'll have to be honest.. at first I didn't think the iPod was worth the money.. then I got one.. and I love it.. it's the best thing since sliced cheese!
J: Finally, any predictions for the outcome of the game? Are you looking forward to half-time? You weren't born yet but Paul McCartney used to be with a band called the Beatles. Do you remember them?
P: Hmm.. no predictions really.. only that i'm gonna win the super bowl pool this year.. ALL FOUR QUARTERS!!! with the reverse score too!!
As for halftime.. I never really cared about it.. until they put the Fear Factor with the Playboy Bunnies on a rival station. I missed the Lingerie bowl last year.. I know it's lame.. it's just a bunch of half naked women on tv.. but let's remember one thing.. I'm a GUY!! I LIVE FOR THAT!!!
Ahh.. Paul McCartney.. I dunno. I think he's too old to do the Halftime show.. I mean are we going to listen to YELLOW SUBMARINE all day!! I think the NFL wussed out since the Janet Jackson fiasco.. HAVE SOME BALLS PEOPLE.. your ratings soared!! remember SEX SELLS!!
J: Oh, one more thing. Which team has the better looking quarterback?
P: No comment.... I don't swing like that.. hahahha
J: Anything else we should know about the party or the game or what's going on with you?
P: There might be alot of drunk people! I may be one of them!
So, that's it. If anyone is watching the Super Bowl this Sunday, wish me luck in the football pool! I bought two squares! I have a birthday lunch in SF to go to that day but I would like to try to watch some of the game at the Guirao's, to see if I have won any money in the pool, watch the commercials and see Paul McCartney during half-time. And... Paul (cousin), he (Paul, the musician) might be old but he was a member of the Beatles!! I mean, the BEATLES!! Of course it will be amazing. Hopefully. : )
